Report highlights

Domestic overnight trips in Britain and in England, January to June 2024:

  • The number of overnight trips declined in the first half of 2024 when comparing to the same period previous year. While both quarters showed a decline, Q2 2024 looked better than Q1 2024 when focussing on y-on-y comparisons. Spend in the first half of 2024 is pulled down by a decrease in Q1 2024 (vs Q1 2023), while Q2 2024 shows a slight y-on-y increase (in both nominal and real terms).

  • A slow first half of 2024, especially Q1, is confirmed by ONS’ consumer spending and business performance data. Looking further ahead, based on other sources, Q3 looks more promising.

  • Some positive increases during the first half (H1) of 2024 were:

    • ‘Domestic overnight stays as part of an overseas trip’ was the only trip purpose to increase in both trip volume and spend in H1 2024.

    • Business trips showed an increase in Q2 2024 vs Q2 2023.

    • City or large towns spend showed an increase of 23% (Britain) / 25% (England) in Q2 2024 vs Q2 2023.

    • Commercial property rental was the only accommodation type showing an increase in H1 2024.

In the below report and data files, you can find further details on regions visited and trip characteristics (including trip purpose, main destination type and accommodation used).

About the survey

The Great Britain Tourism Survey (GBTS) is a national consumer survey measuring the volume and value of domestic overnight trips and day visits taken by residents in Great Britain. GBTS also provides detailed information about trip and visitor characteristics.

The statistics from 2022 onwards below are based on a new combined online survey called Great Britain Tourism Survey and is covering separate modules on overnight trips and day visits. This survey replaced the separate two surveys Great Britain Tourism Survey and Great Britain Day Visits Survey that ran until the end of 2019. Take a read of the methodology and quality report (PDF, 215KB) (PDF, 214.23 KB) to find out more including more details explaining why the new survey data is not comparable with data up until 2019.

This page is showing only the latest reports and data available. Any previous reports and data, including data up to the end of 2019, can be found on the Great Britain domestic overnight trips: archive page.

The Great Britain Tourism Survey (GBTS) is designated as official statistics, labelled as statistics in development and follows the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (2022) set by the Office for Statistics Regulation.

VisitEngland jointly sponsors the survey with our partners VisitScotland and Visit Wales.
